The Basic Beanie

This is the simplest beanie you may ever make! There is no decreasing, it is done in a chunky yarn, and is just so quick to make. Perfect for beginner knitters or knitters wanting to learn how to knit with circular needles.

 

The Basic Beanie is knit in Martta the Merino which is a beautiful plump yarn from Finland, lightly spun and incredibly soft. It is available in a range of colours pictured below.

 

 

Natural Gray, Lavender, Pearl and Cloud.

 

 Bay, Duck Egg and Mint.

 

Coral, Candy, Hot Pink and Dusty.

 

 

What you need:

1 x 200 gram skein of Martta the Merino

10 mm circular needles with a 40 cm cable, or 10 mm straight needles.

Tapestry needle for stitching the beanie together and weaving in loose ends.

Place marker or scrap piece of yarn in a contrasting colour to mark beginning of round. (this is only necessary for knitting the beanie on a circular needle)

 

Finished dimensions: approx 47 cm in diameter and 24 cm in length.

 

Gauge: 8 stitches and 12 rows to 10 cm

 

 

Knitting the Basic Beanie in the round:

 

Cast on 38 stitches, and join to knit in the round. Place marker at beginning of round and knit every row until piece measures 24 cm from cast on edge.

Cut yarn leaving a 30 cm tail and thread through tapestry needle. Thread the needle through all 38 of the live stitches, pull tight and fasten on the inside of the beanie. Weave in loose ends.

 

Knitting the Basic Beanie on straight needles.

 

Cast on 40 stitches.

Row 1: Knit

Row 2: Purl

Repeat these two rows until piece measures 24 cm from cast on. Cut yarn leaving a 50 cm tail and thread through tapestry needle. Thread the needle through all 40 of the live stitches, pull tight and fasten on the inside of the beanie. Using the same piece of yarn stitch the beanie together using mattress stitch. Weave in loose ends.
